Drive-in racking, also known as through-rack or drive-through racking, features a fully-interlocking assembly structure. The uprights are prefabricated, and the arms are single-press cross-shaped, offering high strength, good rigidity, and an aesthetically pleasing appearance. The top beams and uprights are connected via bolts or an interlocking structure.
This system features densely arranged racking, maximizing space utilization—almost double that of pallet racking. However, it is suitable only for large quantities of the same type of goods, with a last-in, first-out (LIFO) inventory flow.
Selecting this system requires initial unit load work to determine pallet specifications, load capacity, and stacking height. This determines the span, depth, and level spacing of the unit rack. The rack height is determined by the effective height below the truss. The total depth of the rack in the wall area should ideally be limited to 6 pallet depths, while the total depth of the two-sided access rack in the central area should ideally be limited to 12 pallet depths to improve forklift access efficiency and reliability. In this type of racking system, forklifts operate continuously in a "high-lift" manner, making them prone to swaying and colliding with the racks. Therefore, the stability of this type of storage system is relatively poor, and the racks should not be too high, generally kept under 10m. To enhance the overall stability of the racking system, larger specifications and selections are needed, along with horizontal and vertical bracing devices. Individual goods should not be excessively large or heavy, generally weighing under 1500kg, and the pallet span should not exceed 1.5m. Goods can be stored and retrieved from the same side (LIFO) or stored on one side and retrieved from the other (FIFO). It is widely used in the food and cold chain industries, such as dairy and beverage sectors, and can be used in both ambient and frozen storage. Commonly used forklifts include reach trucks or counterbalance trucks.
